Mamata Banerjee Asked Senior Officials Not to Send Me Reports of Violence, Says West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar

West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar Thursday said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had instructed senior officials not to send him the reports of the post-poll violence. Earlier, in the light of the post poll violence in the state, the Governor had summoned the DGP and the Kolkata Police Commissioner. He said, “The home secretary conveyed to me that he has been instructed by her (CM) not to give a law and order update report asked by me, and also not to forward the reports that the DGP and the police commissioner had sent to him.” He further added, “...governance in the state is severely distanced from constitutional prescriptions and the rule of law.” The Governor had spoken to English newspaper Hindustan Times Wednesday. Commenting on the state of bureaucracy in the state, the Governor said, “The bureaucracy is politicised to a level that bureaucrats are virtually frontline political workers.” He also expressed his dissatisfaction over the steps taken by the state government to co check the post poll violence. He said, “There have been virtually no deterrent steps by state functionaries. In such a situation, it is difficult to discount the widespread belief that it is state-sponsored terror.”
